TOPIC: CAST YOUR BREAD UPON WATERS

TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 11:1-5

1 Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.

2 Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

3 If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.

4 He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.

5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

Key Verse: “Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days” (Ecclesiastes 11:1).

MESSAGE:

Casting bread upon the waters is like a figure of speech used in our Bible passage to express a very important Christian service. This expression is talking about sacrificial giving, which is like throwing away something but getting it back in multiple folds after some time.

God rewards generous giving and all deeds of kindness. The merciful God expects us to show mercy and kindness to other people especially the needy around us.

Providence and her sister were each given a sum of #10,000 (Nigerian currency) by their uncle who came on holiday from abroad. Providence learnt about the benefits of investment in her Business Study class.

While her sister chose to buy a pair of shoes with her own money, Providence told her mother to open a Special Children Savings Account for her in one of the commercial banks. After some months, the#10,000 yielded some interest which increased the savings.

Whatever we sow is not lost, but well-kept for future harvest. As a farmer reaps more than he sows, so will a cheerful giver reap bountifully.

Friends of Jesus should not be tired of helping the less privileged and all that are in need of help. Give willingly and cheerfully to support the work of God and the people of God around you. You will never lack and you will not miss your reward.

Prayer: Lord, please plant in me a willing heart to give bountifully and cheerfully.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
