DCLM Higher Everyday  26 August 2023 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Command For Your Comfort

Topic: Command For Your Comfort

Text: 1 Kings 17:7-16

7And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

8And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,

9Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

10So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

11And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

12And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

13And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

14For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

15And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

16And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

Key Verse: “And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee” (1 Kings 17:8-9).

Message

In May 1908, John Graham Lake and his family of a wife and seven children, without having a particular place as destination, left for South Africa. The Lake family had been praying diligently for a home when they reached Johannesburg. All they had was their prayer and faith in God. Without prior arrangement, on arrival, an American woman was frantically looking for a family with the number of Lake’s family. The American lady went on to explain how God had directed her to meet their boat and that on it would be an American missionary family consisting of two adults and seven children and that she was to give them a home. She accommodated them and settled them in a furnished home. She remained a faithful friend throughout their ministry.

Lake’s story is similar to the accommodation of Elijah by the widow of Zarephath in our text. All that Elijah did was to obey the command of God. Christian youth today must hear from God and obey His commands. As God multiplied the oil, loaves and fishes, so can He multiply resources for your comfort.

Quote: Obey His command

Challenge: Never limit God.

Prayer for today: Help me Lord, to trust and obey you always.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
