TEXT: Luke 7:19-30

19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.

26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

KEY VERSE: “Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.” – (Luke 7:22)

MESSAGE:

Every age produces its heroes and celebrities in politics, sports, arts, science, etc. It is instructive however that the greatness of these men and women has limitation in time and scope.

John the Baptist in our text sent two of his disciples to inquire from Jesus if He was the expected One or there was yet another to come. John was the forerunner of Jesus and had begun the ministry of reconciliation of the Jewish nation to God through his preaching on repentance and baptism. Jesus’ reply to John was clear testimonies of deliverance of people from satanic bondage and the preaching of the gospel to all and sundry.

Yes, Jesus is the expected One and there is no other to come. He is the Son of God and Messiah of the world. His greatness has been unsurpassed and remains unsurpassable. His creative ability dwarfs the most spectacular scientific breakthroughs. His conquering power is incomparable; His healing capability pales into insignificance the ability of the greatest physicians. He is the greatest Teacher that ever lived. His influence on everyone, regardless of social status, that comes in contact with Him, is life-transforming. He is the King of kings, the Lord of lords.

The question is, have you met Him? If you have not, do not harden your heart; come under His authority through repentance and faith in His atoning blood. If you do, your life will have meaning and your eternity in heaven will be sure.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Jesus is the Messiah; there is no other.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
