Topic: Do Not Be Jealous Of Others

Text: Genesis 37:1-5

1And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

2These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

4And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

Key Verse: “And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.”
Genesis 37:4

Message

Our Bible passage looks at the story of Joseph and his jealous brothers. They got envious because their dad loved Joseph more than the rest of them. Things got worse when Joseph told them about his dreams which show that he will one day rule over his brothers and even his parents. They got so angry they plotted against him and sold him as a slave.

Have you ever felt jealous of someone? Maybe he got chosen for something you wanted, or he had a talent you wish you had or he did better than you in academics? It is important you understand that God has special plans for everybody. We are all unique, with different gifts from God. He does not want us comparing ourselves with others. Instead, He wants us to use our gifts to help others and also make Him happy. We should focus on what we can do to add value to the lives of our brothers, sisters, friends, neighbours and parents.

To overcome jealousy, we should learn to celebrate others’ talents and successes and cheer them on. Remember, God made you unique and He is proud of you. Let us use our talents well and be happy for others when they do great things.

Prayer for today: God, deliver me from jealousy and make me appreciate who I am.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
