DCLM Higher Everyday 21 March 2025 — Emotional Intelligence 4: Empathy
DCLM Higher Everyday 21 March 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Emotional Intelligence 4: Empathy
Topic: Emotional Intelligence 4: Empathy
Text: 1 Peter 3:8-12
8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
10For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
11Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
Key Verse: “Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing” (1 Peter 3:8-9).
Message
George Washington Carver once said, “Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant with the weak and wrong. Sometime in your life, you will have been all of these.” God created humans in His image and expects them to be empathetic towards one another. Empathy is the ability to see the world from other’s point of view and to identify and understand other’s situation, feelings and motives. Those who lack empathetic skills are selfish and only conscious of their personal benefits.

Christian youths are expected to be empathetic towards their sinner friends by preaching Christ to them. Jesus was moved with compassion when He saw the multitude of people laden with sin and without a shepherd to rescue them. You are to read the emotions of others and put yourself in their shoes – rejoicing with those who are rejoicing and mourning with those who are mourning. However, except a sinner repents and accepts Christ, he cannot have a compassionate or an empathetic heart because of the nature of Adam that controls him.
Quote: Put yourself in their shoes
Challenge: Empathy is a core nature of Christ.
Prayer for today: Lord, help me to show empathy towards others.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
