DCLM Higher Everyday 2 January 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — First Thing First
Topic: First Thing First
Text: Matthew 6:31-33
31Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Key Verse: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
Message
Humans tend to yearn for worldly possessions – such as education, money, and fame – but often overlook the desires of their souls, which ultimately will return to God. God’s kingdom is the ultimate destination for a believer after their time on earth. Regarding the pursuit of God’s kingdom at all costs, Spurgeon once said, “Seek that with all your care; seek that with all your energy. Be anxious about that, let your whole mind run in that direction with eagerness and thought. You cannot be too careful or too energetic when God and righteousness are concerned.” The lesson to take from Spurgeon’s advice here is that the kingdom of God and His righteousness are worth all our efforts.

Many youths are drifting away to the things of the world today at the expense of their salvation and eternity with God. Dear friend, make it a priority to seek the kingdom of God today because tomorrow may be too late. Once a soul misses the kingdom of God, hell is inevitable.
Quote: Seek the kingdom of God today
Challenge: God’s kingdom is worth every effort.
Prayer for today: Lord, help me to seek your kingdom and righteousness.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
