DCLM Higher Everyday 29 May 2023 — Focus On Divine Things

DCLM Higher Everyday 29 May 2023 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Focus On Divine Things

Topic: Focus On Divine Things

Text:  Colossians 3:1-4

1If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Key Verse: “Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2).

Message

In his famous book: The Pilgrim’s Progress, John Bunyan describes how Christian, and his companion, Faithful, comported themselves in the town of Vanity Fair on their pilgrimage to heaven. While at Vanity Fair, the pilgrims cared not so much as to look upon the wares that were displayed for sale; instead, they would put their fingers into their ears and cry, “Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity” and look upward, signifying that their attention was fixed on  heaven.

The world has a way of pulling down true Christians by dangling before their eyes sinful entertainments, and temptation to steal, lust after boys or girls, commit internet fraud or cheat in business and exams. Truly regenerated youths make conscious efforts to re-route their affections away from sinful vanities to things that are heavenly. This is achievable as they spend more time meditating on the words of Christ. They should seek God through regular prayers on both personal and corporate basis. They must keep away from intimate relationships with worldly-minded fellows. They are to avoid activities that tend to draw their attention from God and righteousness.

Quote: Seek God through regular prayers

Challenge: Keep looking unto Jesus.

Prayer for today: O Lord, turn away my eyes from beholding vanities.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
