Topic: Forgiveness

Bible Reading: Matthew 18:21-22 (KJV)

21Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

22Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

MEMORY VERSE: “Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times” (Matthew 18:21)?

Message

Robert Muller posited, “To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.” Peter, one of prominent apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, presented a challenging question before Him. Peter sought a possible waiver about forgiveness- that is a permit for Christian retaliation. However, Christ, The Author of love and forgiveness, technically foreclosed the possibility of Christian retaliation by saying: “I say not unto thee, until seven times; but, until seventy times seven.” By this Jesus means somebody must have offended you 490 times before you can retaliate.

Friend, is it possible for an individual to offend you 490 times? Practically, the answer is NO; it simply means Jesus wants you to forgive any person who has offended you. Christians are enjoined to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. They are to bear with one another and forgive one another when there is an offence. Beloved, pray to God to give you the grace to forgive all those who have offended you and be at peace with them.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Lord, give me the grace to forgive those who offend me.

CHALLENGE

Do not hesitate to forgive your enemies.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
