Topic: Foundation of Freedom

Text: John 8: 31-36

31Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.

33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

34Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Key Verse: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

Message

The English poet and hymn writer, William Cowper wrote, “He is the freeman whom the truth makes free, And all are slaves beside.” Every human being is born a sinner, a slave to sin. The only way to know the truth is to obey the true gospel as declared in the Bible. Knowing the truth sets free from the bondage of sin, yoke of Satan, and eternal death. God’s truth gives freedom from the guilt of sin and fear of judgment of God. The Gospel truth breaks the band of misery, destroys and dispels the works of darkness. Truth releases one from ignorance, superstition, and evil passions.

Jesus prayed for the disciples, “Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth.” At salvation a sinner is set free from outward sin. Believing the truth on sanctification provides the believer the opportunity to pray for freedom from inward corruption and the propensity to do evil. Anyone who turns down the truth will remain in bondage to sin and Satan. Come to Jesus, the Fountain of all truth, for independence from Satan.

Quote: Christ has promised sufficient grace

Challenge: Those who reject the truth abide in bondage

Prayer for today: Father, help me never to deviate from the truth.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
