TOPIC: FROM A “NOBODY” TO A HERO

TEXT: JUDGES 6:11-16

11 And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?

15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.

16 And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

Key Verse: “And the LORD said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man” (Judges 6:16).

MESSAGE:

The children of Israel as usual sinned against God. For their punishment, God allowed the Midianites to oppress them. In fact, they could not go to their farms to harvest their crops. There was hunger and suffering in the land.

It was during this time that Gideon the son of Joash hid himself to prepare a little harvest of wheat for his family. Suddenly, the angel of the Lord appeared to him with an important message from the Lord. God had heard the cry of His people and wanted to empower Gideon for the task of delivering His people.

Was Gideon ready for this great task? The answer is No, he was the least qualified person for the job according to his confession. Gideon saw himself as a nobody, he told God he will not be able to carry out the assignment.

God, who is loving and kind, was very patient with Gideon. He gave him some unmistakable signs for him to believe that he can be transformed from a nobody to a person of worth. God empowered Gideon so much that just with three hundred soldiers, he was able to defeat powerful Midian, and became a hero.

Are you one of those children that do not see what God sees in you? Your great potential. In other words, God sees what you will become in future and not what you are today.

Do you see yourself doing great things for God in the future? You can aspire to become a pastor, an evangelist, prayer warrior like Elijah, another Paul or Timothy, a surgeon or an engineer. The important thing is to surrender your life to God as clay to the potter. He will build and empower you to achieve great things in your generation.

Prayer: Lord, give me courage to trust You for the best in my life.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
