TOPIC: GODLY COUNSEL

TEXT: EXODUS 18:14-18

14And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

15And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

16When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

17And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

MEMORY VERSE: “And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good” (EXODUS 18:17).

MESSAGE:

Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law was not an Israelite. Yet, he gave Moses, the servant of God, a godly counsel. When we come to a crossroad in life and do not know which path to take, God may use our anointed spiritual leaders to guide us.

God used the ass of Balaam to correct him, and a little maid in the house of Naaman to inform him on healing. God can also use our unbelieving relatives, neighbours, teaching and non-teaching staff in our schools to give us sound counsels.

However, every counsel must be subjected to the word of God. It is to be rejected only if it runs contrary to the word of God. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20).

If you know that someone is on a wrong path and you can help him out, do not keep quiet, feeling unconcerned. It is good to speak out like Jethro and correct the erring. In Christ-like love, show others the right way.

QUOTE: It is good to speak out like Jethro.

CHALLENGE: You can give right counsels if the Holy Spirit guides you.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to discern godly counsels.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
