DCLM Higher Everyday  1 August 2023 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Hell: The Sinners’ Eternal Home

Topic: Hell: The Sinners’ Eternal Home

Text: Luke 16: 19 – 29

19There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

27Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:

28For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

29Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

Key Verse: “And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torment, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom” (Luke 16:23).

Message

In our text, Jesus spoke of a certain rich man, a certain beggar named Lazarus and Abraham. These were real people who lived on earth many years ago, died and were buried.  Our text, therefore, is not a parable or fiction but a true story. Further revelation from Christ from our text showed two destinations or homes after death. For Lazarus, it was Abraham’s bosom. For the rich man it was Hell!

The Bible continually warns of a place called hell. There are over 162 references in the New Testament alone which warn about hell and over 70 of these were uttered by our Lord Jesus Christ. Hell is real. It is a horrible place of agony, torment, and everlasting destruction. The fire there is not quenched, a place of hopelessness for ever for the sinners. Death is inevitable for all, and the rapture is imminent. The only way to escape hell is to repent and submit to the Lordship of Christ. God does not want you in hell. There is no respite in hell!

Quote: Hell is real

Challenge: Accept Christ to avoid hell.

Prayer for today: Lord, I will not go to hell. Save me!

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
