Text: Exodus 2:11-22

11And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.

12And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

13And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?

14And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

15Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.

16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

17And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

18And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?

19And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.

20And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.

21And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.

22And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.

Key Verse: “And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand” (Exodus 2:12).

Message

In recent times, archaeologists have made some very important discoveries relating to some biblical events. For instance, in December 2021, some archaeologists discovered in Cambridgeshire in the United Kingdom, a nail embedded in the heel bone of a man who was crucified during the Roman era. Earlier in July 2021, a biblical name, Jerubbaal, which was the name given to Gideon after he threw down the altar of Baal made by his father, was found on a pottery sherd from the time of the Judges. These discoveries point to one fact – nothing can be truly hidden that cannot be discovered.

Moses, while growing up, saw the oppression of his people and wanted to apply carnal means to deliver them. He killed an oppressive Egyptian and tried to hide the evidence of his action. Unfortunately, the Israelite he rescued did not join him to conceal the evil matter. So he fled Egypt, knowing his misdeed had been discovered. He ran from the punishment of Pharaoh but never knew he was running into the purpose of God’s salvation for him and his people.

No one can actually run from the shadows of a wrong past. No matter the extent people go to destroy evidence of past actions, sooner or later, mishandled pasts do always come forward to haunt them. If nothing can be hidden easily from the spying eyes of gadgets and devices, what makes modern man think that the almighty God cannot know or remember a misdeed?

Like Moses, instead of trying to bury a past mistake, sin or misnomer fruitlessly, it would be wise to rather expose such deeds to God. Only sincere confession and genuine repentance of such a misdeed will help to clear that past. No matter how bad the past may have been, God is willing to help anyone clear the debt only before we cross over to the other side of eternity.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Only the blood of Jesus can blot out a dirty and damnable past!

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
