TOPIC: HOLD ON TO MAKE HEAVEN

TEXT: HEBREWS 12:12-17

12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

MEMORY VERSE: “Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright” (HEBREWS 12:16).

MESSAGE:

Esau will be remembered in history as the chap who sold his birthright – his rights and privileges as the firstborn. The birthright has to do with both position and inheritance.

As the firstborn son, Esau was entitled to inherit the leadership of the family and the judicial authority of his father. He was eligible to inherit the Abrahamic Covenant, transferred to his father, Isaac, from his grandfather, Abraham. Esau traded off all that in a moment of need and temporary inconvenience. He sold it all, and when he needed it back, he could not recover it.

A Christian youth is an heir to an inheritance purchased by Christ and stored in heaven. But he must hold on to his faith in order to inherit the promises. He is faced with the same temptation to trade off the eternal for the temporal.

Many youths, like Esau, indulge in fornication and other malpractices, just to pass an examination, secure admission or obtain some mundane benefits. It is better to suffer momentary inconvenience and inherit eternal glory than indulge in fleeting gratification and be lost forever.

QUOTE: A Christian youth is an heir.

CHALLENGE: Do not sell your birthright.

PRAYER: Grant me grace to hold on to my birthright, Oh God!

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
