DCLM Higher Everyday 11 August 2025 — If Sickness Strikes
DCLM Higher Everyday 11 August 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — If Sickness Strikes
Topic: If Sickness Strikes
Text: James 5:13-16
13Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
15And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Key Verse: “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (James 5:14).
Message
Diseases, decay and death are the general consequences of the entrance of sin into the world. These consequences may be borne by saints and sinners alike. Scripture records numerous causes of sickness in both the Old and New Testament. Diseases may come as a result of God’s judgment on personal or national sins, Satan’s attack or affliction by evil spirits, personal irresponsibility, bad eating habits, ignorance, neglect of healthy habits, and sometimes, providential acts of God “that the works of God should be made manifest” (John 9:3).

Our text today acknowledges the reality and possibility of afflictions, sicknesses and suffering even among saints. It also recommends a remedy or prescription for saints if sickness strikes. Prayer of faith in the name of the Lord remains the panacea for all forms of diseases and afflictions. Jesus Christ not only bore our sins, He also bore our sicknesses and diseases on the cross. The healing covenant is a component of the full redemption bought by Jesus Christ and is available to all genuine children of God.
Quote: He also bore our sicknesses and diseases.
Challenge: The prayer of faith shall save the sick.
Prayer for today: Heal me O Lord and I shall be healed.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
