TOPIC: IN DISTRESS, REMEMBER GOD’S DEEDS.
TEXT: PSALM 77:1-12.
2In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.
3I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
4Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
5I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
6I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
7Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
8Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
9Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
10And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
11I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.
12I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
MEMORY VERSE “I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old” (PSALMS 77:11).
MESSAGE:
Distress according to Cambridge International Dictionary of English is, “A great mental or physical suffering, such as extreme sadness, worry or pain, or the state of being in great danger and therefore in urgent need of help.” This definition conforms to the experience of the Psalmist in our text. He was so troubled that he could not sleep. However, he sought the Lord, remembered God’s previous good deeds, His wonders of old, and was comforted. Our world today is ravaged by deadly diseases, famine, crime, moral decadence, and economic, political and educational instability. Youths are not exempted from these problems. Are you presently going through a time of distress?
Dear friend, in your time of challenges and distress, remember God’s past deeds. Remember His previous interventions in your life and His faithfulness to you. Recall God’s goodness to you in time past and humbly turn to Him in prayer with unwavering faith. Trust His willingness and His ability to intervene in your situation. He will come to your aid and grant you victory. Surely, great testimonies will be yours.
QUOTE: God has done it before; He will do it again.
CHALLENGE: He will come to your aid
PRAYER FOR TODAY: In distress, help me Lord to remember your past faithfulness.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
