DCLM Higher Everyday 30 September 2022 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Life at its best is short

TOPIC: LIFE AT ITS BEST IS SHORT

TEXT: JAMES 4:13-15

13Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

14Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

15For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

MEMORY VERSE: “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (JAMES 4:14).

MESSAGE:

James asks, “For what is your life?” Moses replies, life is like an interesting story – momentarily enjoyable but soon forgotten. And to Job, life is like a weaving machine that spins fast and furious then stops suddenly.

Isaiah says life is like a flower that flourishes at sunrise and perishes at sunset. James himself compares it to a vapour that distills and disappears all at once. A poet wrote:

“When as a child I laughed and wept, time crept,
When as a youth I dreamed and talked, time walked,
When I became a full grown man, time ran,
And later as I older grew, time flew,
Soon I shall find while traveling on, time gone.”

The tragedy for the average person is that he is too busy with the business of life to consider the brevity of life. Richard L. Evans states it powerfully, “The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.”

Today, take time to ponder on these sobering thoughts: Who am I? What am I doing here? And, where do I go from here? Then pray for wisdom to live righteously.

QUOTE: Where do I go from here?

CHALLENGE: Think deeply how time dictates eternity.

PRAYER: Give me wisdom, Lord, to live right.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
