TOPIC: MENTORSHIP SKILLS

TEXT: 1 TIMOTHY 1:1-10

1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

2Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

3As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

4Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

5Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

6From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

7Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

8But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

9Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

10For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

MEMORY VERSE: “Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 TIMOTHY 1:2).

MESSAGE:

Paul Borthwick said, “Spiritual health demands a friend who will walk alonside us, speak truth to us (even when it hurts), and keep us honest in our relationships with God and with other people.”

Notable contemporary God’s generals followed the guidance of John Wesley, Charles Finney and others through reading their books. They in turn have mentored thousands of Christian soldiers.

Mentorship is the guidance and empowerment provided by an experienced person to an inexperienced fellow by sharing God-given resources.

Paul’s commitment to keeping the gospel untainted led him to transferring his knowledge and skills to Timothy, so that Timothy could guard it, pass it on to other faithful men and keep the Church unpolluted from false doctrine.

Paul tutored and supported the young Timothy in many ways. These are skills required of spiritual fathers or mothers. Christians are to mirror God to the world.

As young believers, learn from experienced faithful mentors, and then be a parent, leader and companion to new converts growing to become disciples. Leave footprints that will inspire others to believe in God.

QUOTE: Inspire others to believe.

CHALLENGE: Look for a worthy mentor to facilitate your spiritual growth.

PRAYER: Oh Lord, may all who come behind me find me faithful.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
