Topic: No Cover Up

Bible Reading: Genesis 37:1-5 (KJV)

1And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

2These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

4And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

KEY VERSE: “… and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.” Genesis 37:2c

Message

Dina could not do well in school again. The parents suspected something must be wrong. Even Dina’s class teacher was concerned as he struggles to keep her awake and paying attention when the lessons are going on. Her mom tried to find out from Dina why she was doing so poorly in her academics. But Dina would not tell the truth. Little did the parents know that Dina has formed the bad habit of waking up every midnight to watch the TV till about 4 o’ clock in the morning. Leslie, Dina’s youngest brother, who had been observing Dina’s night activities decided to tell the mother.

Dina covered up her nightly activities. She warned the brothers never to tell the mother. There is a common practice particularly among children; the attitude of covering up their evil activities and the bad conduct of their siblings and friends. They feel telling the truth about their evil deeds will show that they are bad, and exposing other peoples’ evil actions will cause others to hate and punish them. Joseph was unhappy with his brothers for their bad behaviour.

He did not have to hide the ungodly actions of his brothers, but reported them to his father. Joseph was not afraid of their present hatred towards him. He knew God will punish him along with his brothers if he helped them to cover up their sins. God warns us against covering our sins (Proverbs 28:13), and that of others. You are to repent and never to cover your sins.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Lord, deliver me from the foolishness of trying to cover up my sins and that of others.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
