TOPIC: OBEY YOUR PARENTS – 1
TEXT: PROVERBS 23:13-22
13Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
14Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
15My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
16Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
17Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
18For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
19Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
21For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
22Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Key Verse: “Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old” (Proverbs 23:22).
MESSAGE:
Parents are great and special gifts from God to children. There are different categories of parents, they are biological (mother and father), spiritual (pastors and teachers), and secular (teachers, head teacher, those in authority). All these categories are given to children to nurture, train and guide them in the right way so that they can become useful and fruitful members of the society.
Whatever you are taught by your parents is for your own good. Therefore, it will be in your best interest to listen to their instructions and obey them. Children who listen to and obey their parents will enjoy great benefits and blessing from God. While those who reject their parents’ counsel and godly teachings will live to regret their actions.
Obey and respect your parents always. When you are being corrected, accept it humbly and don’t see your parents as your enemies. Avoid laziness, be serious with your academic programmes and do your house chores. Stay away from bad friends who give bad advice. Let the “fear of God” be in you. When you obey your parents, you will prosper and grow up to be a well-behaved and responsible adult.
Prayer: Lord, make me an obedient child.

1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
