DCLM Higher Everyday  7 September 2023 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Quench Not The Spirit

Topic: Quench Not The Spirit

Text: 1 Thessalonian 5:15-19

15See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

16Rejoice evermore.

17Pray without ceasing.

18In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

19Quench not the Spirit.

Key Verse: “Quench not the Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19).

Message

Elisha’s servant lamented the loss of a borrowed axe, a vital tool for his work. With the loss of the axe head, he was rendered irrelevant and unproductive (2 Kings 6:5). The Spirit of God, as the third personality in the Godhead, gives every believer power and grace to serve the Lord with passion. He is gentle and would not strive with man.

Symbolically, He is expressed as fire or wind. As the natural fire may be quenched, or put out using extinguishers, so can the Spirit’s presence in a believer be put out. While He helps and guides believers, in their walk and service to God, He leads sinners to conviction and genuine conversion experience.

Believers must avoid all the works of the flesh, such as: strife, murmuring, anger, bitterness, lying, and lack of forgiveness so that they do not quench the Spirit. We must abide in the truth, read the Scriptures daily, be fervent in spirit, preach Christ to our colleagues, and continue in fellowship with the brethren to keep the unbroken fellowship of the Spirit.

Quote: We must abide in the truth

Challenge: Without the Spirit’s presence you are powerless.

Prayer for today: O God, give me the grace to retain the indwelling of your Spirit.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
