TOPIC: RECROGNISE GOD’S VOICE
BIBLE TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 3:4-10
4 That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
5 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.
8 And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
9 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
KEY VERSE: “That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I” (1 Samuel 3:4).
MESSAGE:
It is a common thing for people who are related or have been together for a long time to recognise one another’s voices. It is easy for you to know when Daddy or Mummy is talking. This is because you have lived with them for a long time and now you can easily recognise when they are talking or calling you. You can hardly recognise the voice of a stranger because you are not familiar with it.
In our Bible passage, God called little Samuel in a clear voice for the first time, and because Samuel had been with Eli for a long time, he thought Eli was the one calling him. Eli later educated Samuel on how to answer and relate with God. Many children today do not know when God is calling them. They can simply not recognise the voice of God. God speaks to everyone, whether believer or unbeliever. He is constantly calling sinners to stop sinning against Him. He talks more to believers.
God talks to people through His word (the Bible), His servants (preachers), the Holy Spirit, godly parents and teachers. The more you recognise and respond to the call of God, the more He talks with you. But if you are fond of disobeying God, you will discover that He (God), will leave you alone as He did to Eli, and choose to talk with other people. Live a life that pleases God so that He can draw you closer to Himself. Sinners should heed the call of God by repenting of their sins and surrendering their lives to Jesus.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to recognise Your voice and promptly answer whenever You call me.
FURTHER READING: Isaiah 6:8-10
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
