DCLM Higher Everyday 3 January 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Retribution For Rebels
Topic: Retribution For Rebels
Text: Numbers 16:31-35
31And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:
33They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
34And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
35And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
Key Verse: “And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them” (Numbers 16:31).
Message
According to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, retribution is a noun which means severe punishment for something serious that someone has done. Rebellion led by the trio of Korah, Dathan and Abiram is akin to a military coup. Punishment for such act is capital punishment. Korah, Dathan and Abiram, plotted against the leadership of Moses. Just like coup plotters are visited with summary execution, rebellion against God and His appointed ministers attracts severe Judgement.

The rebels in our text did not realize that their rebellion was not only against Moses but also against God. Youths who seek their rights, the way the ungodly seek theirs, by carrying placards, violently demonstrating against constituted authorities, writing malicious anonymous petitions against their pastors and disobeying ushers in the church are in the acts of rebelion.
Salvation through repentance from all sins frees one from all sins including the sin of rebellion. Dear friend, repent of rebellion against constituted authority and you will attract the blessing of God upon your life, instead of judgement and anguish as we can see in the case of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.
Quote: Dear friend, repent of rebellion
Challenge: Avoid the company of rebels.
Prayer for today: Lord, make me always an obedient Child.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
