DCLM Higher Everyday 3 January 2024 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Reward of Following Christ
Topic: Reward of Following Christ
Text: Matthew 19:27-30
27Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
29And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.
30But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
Key Verse: “And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life” (Matthew 19:29).
Message
Peter and his fellow disciples had just witnessed the sad case of a rich man who would rather hug his riches than follow Jesus. He had made an unfortunate choice. His action threw up some questions in the mind of Christ’s followers. The ever vocal apostle, Peter was the first to ask if following Jesus was worth the sacrifice they had to make.

Dear Christian friend, have you pondered the same question too? Have you been tempted to think that following Jesus is a waste of time? But Peter should not have forgotten so soon how Jesus provided many fishes on their earlier encounter. Nevertheless, Jesus gave Peter an answer that should settle the matter of discipleship in your heart. In summary, Christ promised that His followers shall receive multiples of whatever they gave up in following Him. If you stay true to the end, you earn the right to abundant earthly and eternal blessings. So then, following Jesus pays rich dividends. Coming from the lips of the Faithful One, these promises are trustworthy, they can never fail. Do you believe this?

Challenge: What shall separate you from the love of Christ?
Prayer for today: Heavenly Father, help me never to wander away from Christ. Amen.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
