DCLM Sincere Milk  4 July 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Run: It Is A Race

Topic: Run: It Is A Race

Bible Reading: Hebrews 12:1-3 (KJV)

1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

2Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

KEY VERSE: “and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,” Hebrews 12:1b

Message

Most of the students in the school, believed that Jolly is the greatest runner they have ever known. Now the Zonal Schools’ Sport Competition had commenced and it was time for the “Cross Country Race”: a race that covers a distance of about three kilometers. Students usually go in the opposite direction for about half a kilometer to wait and cheer their favourite runner. Jolly soon emerged from the team of competitors and the shout of Jolly! Jolly! Jolly! Jolly! rented the air as Jolly was galloping home like a horse. But just a few metres to the finish line, Jolly’s steps began to slow down. The cheering students wished they could carry Jolly through. Painfully, Jolly fell about three metres to the finish line and lost the prize leaving his fans with hands on their heads sobbing. But one thing about running is that nobody ever undertakes it without a purpose; it is always done with a reward or benefit in mind. One difference is that those who run in sports finish in a short while, but the race to heaven will last as long as we live on earth.

You do not necessarily run the race to heaven with your legs, but, mainly with your heart. So, you must have the mind of a runner; determined to finish the race and win the prize. You do not have many people along the way to heaven to cheer or encourage you, but you must determine by the grace of God, to overcome sin, Satan, temptations, discouragement, shame and loneliness. Live each day patiently, waiting in prayer, righteousness and service to your Lord.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

I have no strength of my own to run the race; I’m looking unto You, my Lord, to help me. Don’t let me fall by the way side.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
