DCLM Higher Everyday 15 March 2024 — Taming Of The Tongue

DCLM Higher Everyday 15 March 2024 Devotional by Pastor W. F. KumuyiTaming Of The Tongue

Topic: Taming Of The Tongue

Text: James 3:7-12

7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

Key Verse: “But the tongue can no man tame;  it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8).

Message

It was C. T. Studd who wisely stated that, “Whatever moves the heart wags the tongue.” Everybody delights to speak. Many say what they later wish they never said. No wonder King Solomon wrote that, “In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise” (Proverbs 10:19). Wild beasts and dangerous snakes have been tamed by man. Unfortunately some persons have taught their tongues to speak lies, and wearied themselves to commit iniquity (Jeremiah 9:5). Untamed tongues are controlled by the flesh and Satan.

It is very amazing to know that life is in the power of the tongue (1Peter 3:10). When we keep our tongues, we do ourselves much good as we can learn more in quietness. We learn a lot by listening to others instead of engaging in much talking that cause spiritual leakage. Speak only when it is necessary. Talk more to God than to people.

Taming the tongue involves salvation, sanctification and meditating on God’s word. Pray for a pure heart and the Holy Spirit will direct your speech.

Quote: Talk more to God than to people

Challenge: Tame your tongue by thinking before speaking.

Prayer for today: O God, help me to speak wisely in Jesus’ name.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
