TOPIC: THE BEATITUDE – 1

TEXT: MATTHEW 5:3-13

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

MEMORY VERSE: “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (MATTHEW 5:3).

MESSAGE

The word ‘Beatitude’ is derived from a Latin word ‘Beatitudo’ which means ‘blessedness’. The beatitude consists of the blessed sayings that started from the opening verses of Matthew Chapter 5. Each saying speaks of the blessings that will be bestowed on a person, who possesses a certain quality of character.

In our text, to be poor in spirit is to recognize that one is not spiritually self-sufficient and needs God more than ever before. Therefore, as a youth, you are bankrupt spiritually without Christ. You need to totally depend on Him in every area of your life.

Another quality character in verse 5 is meekness; the meek are the strongest and most courageous people on earth. They have their power under control and do not show off; rather, they are submissive and humble before God. They are more concerned about the work of God and His people than themselves. They do not retaliate in the face of hostility. Are you meek and slowly, to a point of maintaining calmness and gentleness in the face of hostility?

QUOTE: Totally depend on Him.

CHALLENGE: Maintain calmness and gentleness.

PRAYER: Help me to depend solely on You, when provoked, Oh God!

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
