TOPIC: THE BURNING BUSH

BIBLE TEXT: EXODUS 3:1-10

1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;

8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.

10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.

MEMORY VERSE: “And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed” (EXODUS 3:2).

MESSAGE:

A Christian writer posited that, “There are several reasons why God revealed Himself to Moses out of the burning bush… God reveals Himself as a fire in that it is an image of His holiness. All through the Bible, fire is pictured as a purifying and refining instrument of God’s holiness. This is further evidenced when God commands Moses to remove his sandals ‘for the place where you are standing is holy ground…'”

God was touched with the sufferings of His people, Israel. Of course, this is the first time God called Israelites His people – “my people.” Israel was experiencing oppressive Egyptian bondage, they hoped in God and cried to Him for deliverance. God heard their cry by delivering them from their enslavement and chronic suffering.

Are you suffering today and in distress? Do you struggle with your academic work? Are you burdened with the load of sin? Cry to God for help. If you trust and depend on Him, He will surely answer and show His mighty power in your life. God’s glory is like a consuming fire.

QUOTE: God’s glory is like a consuming fire.

CHALLENGE: The bush may burn, but God’s people won’t.

PRAYER: Give me oil in my lamp and keep me burning, O Lord.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
