TOPIC: THE GREAT HIGH PRIEST

TEXT: HEBREWS 4:14-16

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Key Verse: “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession” (Hebrews 4:14).

MESSAGE:

The word “Priest” has different meanings. First, it means one who mediates (stands on behalf) of others before God. It also means one who is holy and set apart to perform divine functions. The first place we find the word used in the Bible is in Genesis 18, with reference to Melchizedek, King of Salem and priest of the Most High.

During the time of Moses, God instructed him to choose Aaron and the family of Levi, and consecrate them as priests. The priests were responsible for making intercession to God for the people by offering the many sacrifices that the law required.

Among the priests, one was selected as the high priest who always entered into the Most Holy place once a year on the Day of Atonement to make sacrifices for the people. By these daily and yearly sacrifices, the sins of the people were temporarily covered until the Messiah came to die for us.

Jesus is our great High Priest because like Melchizedek, He is ordained as a Priest forever. Unlike the Levitical priests who had to continually offer sacrifices, Jesus only had to offer His sacrifice once, gaining eternal redemption for all who will come to God through Him.

Jesus is greater than any other priest. This knowledge should give us the boldness to come unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Prayer: My great High Priest, let me find grace and help from You in time of need.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
