TOPIC: THE LIFE AND THE LIGHT
TEXT: JOHN 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Key Verse: “In him was life; and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).
MESSAGE:
Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord, is the Life and Light of all men. Life and light are important attributes of our Saviour.
The “Life in the Spirit Study Bible” gives us a detailed explanation of these attributes thus: “Life is a featured term in John’s gospel and epistles. Jesus is the Life, the Bread of Life and the Living Water. His words are the words of eternal life. He is the Giver of life. Thus, the life revealed in Jesus is important to us as we abide in intimate relationship with Him by faith. This life is eternal life enjoyed now and is ours in its fullness through our future resurrection.”
Light is mentioned 23 times in John’s gospel, more than in any other book of the Bible. Jesus is the Light, and through Him, we become children of light and must walk in the light and develop the fruit of light.
To come into the life and light of Christ, a sinner must repent, turn from his bad ways and accept Jesus as personal Saviour and Lord. A true friend of Jesus must daily shine the light to lead sinners out of darkness and show them the way into the kingdom of God.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to receive life from You, accept and save me through Your blood.
Further Reading: 1 John 1:1-7
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
