TOPIC: THE MIRAGE EXPERIENCE

TEXT: SAMUEL 18:22-30

22 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law.

23 And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

24 And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.

25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law: and the days were not expired.

27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

28 And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.

29 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

KEY VERSE: And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law” (l Samuel 18:22).

MESSAGE

A mirage is optical illusion in the desert, sea or plane surface during sunny day. It occurs under certain atmospheric conditions, in which objects appear to be real from a distance. An observer Viewing it would hope it is a lake in the distance if he is travelling across the desert. As the thirsty traveller moves on in expectation of a stream to quench his thirst, he discovers the water he appeared to have seen has moved or disappeared. It is unreal.

David was ensnared in that illusory hope when the murderous King Saul presented a marriage proposal to make him his in-law. The devilish conspiracy to eliminate the young son of Jesse
had been with splendid prospects. Who would not readily grab a lifetime chance to be a member of royal family through marriage to a king’s daughter?

Yet, not all that glitters is gold. Many hell-inspired counsel and propositions come our way wrapped with good intentions. But their contents are deadly. The only way to avoid their enticement is to seek the Lord. He can guide {he avoid their believer who reaches out to Him for help. David did not go to God for approval before plunging into the deal with Saul. It was unusual of him; still, the Lord was with him. He leapt over the first hurdle schemed to have him killed by the Philistines through Saul’s demand.

Believers ought to be wary about agreements they enter because there are false brethren who are seeking to trap us in temptations of all sorts and distract us from being ready for the rapture. We need to turn over every detail of our secular and ministerial life to God in prayer to avoid falling into the false hope of a mirage.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: MATTHEW 6-7

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Focus on the Messiah, not the mirage.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
