TOPIC: THE OLD AND THE NEW LIFE
TEXT: 2 CORINTHIANS 5:14-17
14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Key Verse: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
MESSAGE:
Sin came into this world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve. In other words, everyone inherited the nature of sin (the old life), from the fallen Adam and Eve. But thanks be to God who sent Jesus to die for us so that the nature of sin can be removed.
The moment a child accepts Jesus Christ as personal Saviour and Lord, the old life of sin gives way to a new life of righteousness. Telling lies, fighting, abusive language, stealing and the rest can no longer be found in the life of a true friend of Jesus.
A song writer wrote thus:
“The things I used to do,
I do them no more,
There is a great change
Since I got born again.”
Therefore, a born-again child of God should understand that he or she is now a new being and cannot commit sin again. The grace of God is sufficient for all children who are ready to leave the old lifestyle and live in newness of life.
Prayer: Lord, help me to always live the new life and never go back to my old life of sin.
Further Reading: Colossians 3:3-10
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
