TOPIC: THE ROCK OF AGES
TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 10:1-6
2And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
4And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
5But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
Key Verse: “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4).
MESSAGE:
During the wilderness journey of the children of Israel, they had cause to ask for water. God instructed Moses to strike a particular Rock to get water for His people. He did, and water came out in abundance for everyone to drink.
The second time, the children of Israel also asked for water, and Moses still had to cry to God. He did not take it for granted that he could just go ahead and strike any rock. Then God told him to speak to a particular Rock. Moses went ahead to strike rather than speak to the Rock. This simple disobedience hindered Moses from entering the promised land.

The New Testament confirms that, that Rock in the wilderness was Christ. The Rock was a type of Him from whom flows the Living Water. Jesus is the Rock of Ages, and on Him all things rest since the foundation of the world. In Him we have all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and from Him, they flow forth freely to all who thirst after truth and holiness.
As the Rock of Ages, Jesus provides refuge for all His friends. We need protection, and the only way to escape God’s wrath and find protection is through Jesus Christ alone. He is the Son of God who bore our sins on the cross that we might enjoy the benefit of eternal life. Like the famous hymn writer, Augustus Montage Toplady, we must confess to Him:
“Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee…”
Prayer: Rock of Ages, save and keep me from all harm.

1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)

4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
