TOPIC: THE SORROWFUL END OF KING SAUL

TEXT: 1 CHRONICLES 10:1-6

1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

2And the Philistines followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

3And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him, and he was wounded of the archers.

4Then said Saul to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

5And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.

6So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

Key Verse: “So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together” (1 Chronicles 10:6)

MESSAGE:

Disobedience to God’s will has serious and deadly consequences. It makes someone to lose the favour of God. The Bible story about King Saul, the first king of Israel, is interesting and also sad. It is a story referred to as a tragedy.

Everyone has the choice to either live a life of obedience to God’s will and be blessed or a life of disobedience and self-will which ends up in regret and sorrow.

God anointed Saul, the first king of Israel. He had a very humble background, but God exalted him to be king. Saul became proud and started misbehaving. He disobeyed God’s instructions, rejected godly counsel and became a wicked and cruel king.

During his reign, he became ‘mad’ as a result of affliction from an evil spirit. At the end, he was killed together with his children at the battle front. What a sorrowful way to end one’s life!

A life of arrogance, self-will and stubbornness will only lead to death and destruction. King Saul got disconnected from God completely and ended his life in a tragic way.

God is merciful and He is warning every sinner not to go the way of Saul, but repent and surrender completely to Jesus. Accept Jesus as your Saviour and Lord to escape destruction that awaits unrepentant sinners.

Prayer: Lord, give me power to obey You at all times so as to end well.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
