DCLM Sincere Milk 7 August 2025 — Violence Against Your Brother?

DCLM Sincere Milk 7 August 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Violence Against Your Brother?

Topic: Violence Against Your Brother?

Text: Obadiah 1:10-14

10For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

11In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

12But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

13Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

14Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.

Key Verse: “For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever. Obadiah 1:10

Message

Merriam Webster’s Dictionary defines ‘violence’ as the use of physical force so as to injure, abuse, damage, or destroy. The story in our Bible passage is frightening; that somebody should choose to hurt his own brother. Esau really hated his brother Jacob. He passed this hatred over to his children and his children’s children. The sin of the children of Esau was so great. They rejoiced over the misfortune of their brothers, mocked them and killed those of them who had no chance to escape from death. God cursed Esau and his children saying they would be covered with shame and they would be cut off or destroyed completely.

Your brothers and sisters need your help and care. But what do you do to them? Beat them? cheat them? lie against them? fight with them? No, that shouldn’t be! Repent, ask them and God too to forgive you, else you cannot escape the punishment that came on Esau and his children. Remember that God was not happy with Cain, the brothers of Joseph, Miriam and Aaron for the evils they did to their younger brothers. Always show love and care to your brothers and sisters and other friends of Jesus. Then you will enjoy God’s favour and blessings.

Prayer for today: Lord, help me to love and take care of my younger ones and protect them from every harm.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
