TOPIC: WALKING IN THE TRUTH
TEXT: 3 John 1-7
1The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
3For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
6Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
7Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
KEY VERSE:
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth” – (3 John 4)
MESSAGE
Many Christians pride themselves to be astute defenders of the truth. They claim to be walking by the truth but they are mere legalistic bigots who do not properly understand what the truth is, let alone know what it means to walk in it.
In this Epistle, John the beloved writes to commend one of the outstanding Christians whose life, works and testimony showed that he was walking in the truth. The apostle commended him for having an excellent spiritual life and prayed that he would prosper materially and be in good health just as he was prospering spiritually. Gaius’ walk in the truth was not characterised by a mere adherence to a set of dogmas; but a lively manifestation of the Spirit of truth revealed and demonstrated in practical love. The testimonies that got to John about Gaius’ hospitality and support given to those who went about the work of Christ gladdened the apostle’s heart. He, therefore, encouraged him to continue in good work.
To walk in the truth goes beyond having a mental knowledge of the Bible. It entails living out these truths in practical demonstration of love. While many have good knowledge of the Word, they are devoid of love. Instead of encouraging others towards the path of truth, they drive them away from it.
We need to check up our lives to see if we are actually living by the truth. How much love do we have and show towards others? We should not just live by the letters of the law; let the Spirit of love rule us.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: To walk in the truth is to walk in the love of Christ.

1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
