DCLM Higher Everyday 30 June 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Watch Your Words

Topic: Watch Your Words

Text: James 1:17-21

17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

18Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

19Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

20For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Key Verse: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1: 19).

Message

Yehuda Berg once said, “Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate, and to humble.” The misuse of words, exemplified through bullying, harassment, discrimination, cyber bullying, and family conflicts, can significantly impact a person’s self-esteem and mental health. James underscores the profound impact of words in our lives, acknowledging their potential to ignite or extinguish fires. As recipients of God’s grace, we are called to reflect His character in both our words and actions. James advocates for cultivating attentiveness, patience, understanding, and grace in our speech. He emphasizes avoiding impurity and the spread of malice, encouraging the implantation of God’s word in our hearts to transform our speech.

By intentionally monitoring our words, we can radiate God’s light in a world in need of the transformative power of words spoken in love and truth. Exercise caution in your speech to show care for those in your home, school, church, and community. Prioritize listening over speaking and make thoughtful language choices daily.

Quote: Exercise caution in your speech

Challenge: What is the effect of your words on your hearers?

Prayer for today: Oh God, help me to heal with my tongue, in Jesus’ name.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
