TOPIC: WINE IS A MOCKER

TEXT: PROVERBS 20:1-5

1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

MEMORY VERSE: “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise” (PROVERBS 20:1).

MESSAGE:

History has uncovered that most colonial masters subsidized alcoholic drinks to be very cheap for indigenes of their colonies. By this, they drank and lost their wisdom to defend the wealth which their oppressors carted away. They even signed some documents that enslaved them under the influence of liquor.

Today, the effects of love for sinful pleasures and intoxicants are very shameful. Wine is a silent mocker which fills its captive with shame and wounds. Many accidents on our roads attest to the damage from strong drinks.

Words of wisdom from our text, classify wine along with strong drink. Wine will take away vigilance from the godly and put him on the path of the ungodly. Where merry making preoccupies a people, crime rate is always high. Strife, fighting and immorality are also common in party houses and clubs.

To remain sober and holy in thoughts and actions, we must reject strong drinks, hard drugs and excess pleasure. Can you remember great men who fell by wine? The list includes Noah, powerful Samson, Kings Ahasuerus and Belshazzar. Avoid the poison which destroys kings.

QUOTE: Avoid the poison which destroys kings.

CHALLENGE: Say no to intoxicants and drunkenness.

PRAYER: Oh God, give me wisdom to avoid intoxicants in Jesus’ Name.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
