TOPIC: No Carnality In The Church (DCLM Daily Manna 6 April 2021)

TEXT: John 2:14-16

14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.

KEY VERSE: “And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.” – (John 2:16)

MESSAGE:

David Revenhill wrote in his “Modern Day Money Changers” sermon: “I’m convinced that the carnal, conniving, crooked crooks that Jesus drove out of the Temple are still among us today. These modern-day money changers are forever devising new and deceptive doctrines to defraud God’s people of their money.”

Jesus drove out the buyers and sellers who had turned the temple into a place for merchandise. During His day, the High Priest’s position became a political office, used to control and profit from the vast commerce taking place in the temple. The money changers were equally on hand to exchange money to afford those coming from afar means of purchasing items needed for the daily sacrifices. Jesus drove them out in an attempt to preserve the true purpose of the temple.

It is not sinful to buy and sell. In fact, we cannot separate ourselves from the daily routine of buying and selling. This is how needs are met and how wealth is generated. But problems arise when business transactions are done in the house of God, which is supposed to be a place of prayers, worship, preaching and hearing of the Word. It diverts attention from true worship to mundane affairs.

The Lord frowns at converting places of worship into places of worldly business, where all that the believer has forsaken in the world rear their ugly heads again. These include the spirit rivalry, the love of money, show of wealth and all forms of lust.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Do not bring the world into the church.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
John 16-18

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
