DCLM Higher Everyday 16 November 2021 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — The widow’s Mites

TOPIC: THE WIDOW’S MITES

TEXT: MARK 12:41-44

41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

MEMORY VERSE: “And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury” (MARK 12:42, 43).

Nino Varsimashvili says that “Sometimes, little things make a big difference…”

According to the story of the widow’s mites in the book of Mark, Jesus was watching different categories of people put money into the temple treasury. Rich people put in huge amounts of money, but a poor widow put in two mites worth about a penny.

Here, Jesus saw a lesson for His disciples and all believers today. He said that the poor widow had given more than all the others because they gave out of their excesses, but she gave all she had to live on.

In this story, Jesus commends sacrificial giving that is proportional to our income. Youths should learn to give out of their pocket money to God because He will reward them abundantly.

What matters to God concerning giving is our heart, not how much we really give. Do we give because we know it is meant for the work of the kingdom or we give because we want to be noticed? Remember, the Lord is most pleased with those who sow sacrificially.

QUOTE: Sow sacrificially.

CHALLENGE: God is more concerned about the heart.

PRAYER: My God, teach me to give sacrificially.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
