TOPIC: Faith Works! (DCLM Daily Manna 31 March 2024)

KEY VERSE: “Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee” (1 Kings 17:9).

TEXT: 1 Kings 17:8-16 (KJV)

8 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,

9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

12 And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

14 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth.

15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Elijah.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Famine in human history is ancient and recurrent. Abraham, with his son and grandson, Isaac and Jacob respectively, had their own experiences of this unpleasant situation. However, the fact is that God gave each of them victory.

The text reveals another episode of famine in the land of Israel. The whole nation, including the prophet of God, felt the devastation which this calamity unleashed on the people. The divine providence that brought Elijah the prophet, the widow of Zarephath and her household out of famine is the focus of our reflection this day.

Elijah obeyed God’s instruction that he should go to Zarephath and dwell there for his sustenance. The widow on her part, obeyed with adorable submission, the word and instruction of the prophet to provide him a little cake. And the God of miracle multiplied the meagre flour and oil of the poor woman into a store house of food that sustained them all. “And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah and she and he (Elijah) and her house, did eat many days”.

The force and effect of faith in action are quite observable in the lives of trusting saints. Faith fixes all things for us, including food in famine. True! GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
