TOPIC: GOD DEFENDS HIS OWN

TEXT: Exodus: 18:16-24

16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

KEY VERSE:
“And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.” – (Exodus 8:22)

MESSAGE:
The Bible is replete with ordinary folks who got elevated to positions of authority and who ironically arrogated such pre-eminence to themselves. One of such is Pharaoh of Egypt in the days of Moses. He became so deluded that he thought he was superior to the Almighty. It is always amusing to witness the way God demystifies arrogant and stubborn men, and proves to all that He is the Lord without an equal.

The passage today describes the release of the third and fourth plagues over the land of Egypt. The third plague turned dust into lice, which attacked both man and beast. Pharaoh’s magicians attempted to enchant something similar but they could not. This confirmed to Pharaoh that it was the handiwork of God. Yet Pharaoh hardened his heart, which prompted the fourth plague – the release of grievous swarm of flies all over Egypt. But in Goshen where the Israelites dwelt, God made a demarcation that not one single fly was found there. This was to prove to Pharaoh and Egypt that God defends His own.

We should not doubt the ability of the Almighty to save to the uttermost and to frustrate those who rise against us. God truly has the capacity to give light in a particular place and darkness in another. He can do anything to protect and defend His chosen ones.

God still defends His people today. Even when it seems the devil and his cohorts are gaining the upper hand and the children of God are losing out, our heavenly Father will move swiftly to crush the enemy and reverse the trend.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
If God be for us, who can be against us?

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Joshua 22-24

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
