TOPIC: “ME FIRST”

TEXT: LUKE 9:59-62

59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Key Verse: “And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house” (Luke 9:61).

MESSAGE

The attitude of ‘Me first’ or self-preference, that is, desiring to please yourself before others, is common to children and adults alike. It is that attitude of favouring or loving yourself above those around you. It is choosing your will, comfort, pleasure and joy in complete disregard to that of others.

It is easy to spot a ‘me first’ person. He is selfish, stubborn, self-willed, rude, unreliable and disobedient. He makes promises, and when he realizes it will cost him something more, he will not keep those promises.
The man in our Bible passage offered, on his own, to follow the Lord. Without having taken a step in that direction, he quickly placed a condition on his offer. He wanted to go and say good-bye first to the people at home. How is he sure that the relations at home will not discourage him from following the Master?

Sincere followers of Christ are those who do not think of looking back in their decision to follow Jesus. If you have chosen to love Jesus, having turned away from your sins and made Him your Saviour, Jesus must come first in your life. You cannot seek the counsel of your sinful friends and family members on how to serve your Saviour. Make up your mind to follow the path of righteousness and obedience to the Lord.

Prayer: Lord, help me to do Your will always no matter what it will cost me.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
