TOPIC: MODESTY IN DRESSING

TEXT: 1 TIMOTHY 2:9-10

9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

MEMORY VERSE: “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array” (1 TIMOTHY 2:9).

MESSAGE:

Generally, modesty affects all areas of life – being humble, simple and moderate in all things and not attracting attention to one’s self. In our text, Paul wrote specifically to women, urging them to be modest in dressing and adornment. Indeed, the biblical dress code is based on neatness, simplicity, moderateness and decency, covering your body appropriately, yet without detracting from beauty and glory, as was the prescribed garment of the priest, Aaron (Exodus 25:2). A true Christian youth must always abstain from immodest dressing and adornment.

A youth’s beauty should not be determined by wearing the clothes that expose sensitive parts of the body or the recent introduction of unsightly haircut and hairdo which are now spreading from sports men and women, musicians and actors to the ordinary youth on the street. Christian youths should avoid such fads; they distract sincere seekers from Christ. Our lifestyle must reflect modesty and outward holiness. Indecent dressing, though trending, is not a hallmark of a heaven-minded believer.

QUOTE: Cover your body appropriately.

CHALLENGE: A meek and humble spirit transcends worldly fashions.

PRAYER: O God, help me to dress modestly to reflect godliness.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
