TOPIC: SHUN SINFUL HABITS

TEXT: 2 TIMOTHY 2:15-19

15Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

17And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

18Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

19Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

MEMORY VERSE: “But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness” (2 TIMOTHY 2:16).

MESSAGE:

“A whole new generation of Christians has come up believing that it is possible to accept Christ without forsaking the world,” A. W. Tozer declared in astonishment. This implies that some individuals will still be practicing sin after accepting Christ. However, such people are not genuine Christians.

A habit simply means an action or pattern of behaviour that someone repeats often without any plan to stop it. Thus, sinful habits refer to the unrighteous behaviour that someone indulges in. These habits include wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, drunkenness, pride, among others (Galatians 5:19-21).

The Bible points out in our text that youths should shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase ungodliness in the society (2 Timothy 2:16). Indeed, irrelevant and foolish talking increase ungodliness. If you listen to what youths discuss over the radio or on the television and the social media these days, you would know why ungodly and immoral activities are on the increase.

Beloved youth of Christ, pray for grace to overcome the pressure to sin. Repent now if you are a sinner.

QUOTE: Profane and vain babblings lead to ungodliness.

CHALLENGE: Shun sinful habits to inherit the kingdom of God.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to shun sinful habits.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
