TOPIC: THE DISCIPLES’ DUTY

TEXT: LUKE 19:12-26

12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

MEMORY VERSE: “And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come” (LUKE 19:13).

MESSAGE:

A disciple learns from and does as his master. Billy Graham said, “To be a disciple is to be committed to Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and committed to following Him every day. To be a disciple is also to be disciplined in our bodies, minds and souls.”

Christ’s interaction with His disciples was always that of a teacher – student relationship. For example, after the miracle of the great catch in Luke 5:10, 11, we are told that immediately, Peter, Andrew, James and John left their boats and nets and followed Jesus to “catch men” for the Kingdom of God. They now understood that Jesus was capable of meeting their needs.

Every Christian has to apply this same lesson in their own lives, because as His disciple, Christ wants you to stick to God’s way and will. Let His teaching affect your life and make you consistently maintain your righteousness.

Remember that Peter and company experienced the miraculous catch because they obeyed Christ’s command. However, salvation precedes service. Be genuinely saved, then serve. God compensates faithful service.

QUOTE: Stick to God’s way and will.

CHALLENGE: God compensates faithful service.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, I surrender my all to You.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
