DCLM Higher Everyday 7 April 2024 — The Glad Parents
Topic: The Glad Parents
Text: Proverbs 23:19-26
19Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
21For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
22Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
23Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
24The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
25Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
26My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Key Verse: “The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice” (Proverbs 23: 24).
Message
In his book “How to Be a Gentleman,” Neil Schreiber said that Good manners are treasured even in today’s world, and will never go out of style. “Glad parents” are parents who are delighted, joyful, and satisfied with their children’s words and conduct. They’re usually gratified and ecstatic when their children make good choices, live honourable lives, and excel in their endeavours.
The Bible text of today urges us to be wise, to respect, obey and pay attention to our parents, to appreciate truth and wisdom, and be conscious of our parents’ practices. Most importantly is the significance of paying attention to and acting upon godly parental guidance as well as avoiding drinking, drug addiction, and all reproachful acts. The path to a happy and more satisfying life is to adhere to sound advice from godly parents and elders.
Don’t trade away virtues like truth, knowledge, and understanding. Always have your parents’ best interests at heart. Remember, to be wise, we must seek and have Jesus, for we won’t discover wisdom outside Christ.
Quote: Adhere to sound advice.
Challenge: Avoid pleasures that cause harm and disgrace.
Prayer for today: Dear Lord, make me wise to lead a holy life. Amen
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
