TOPIC: WHOM DO YOU FOLLOW?
TEXT: Ephesians 5: 1-7
1Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
3But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
4Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
6Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
7Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
MEMORY VERSE: “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour (Ephesians 5:12)
MESSAGE:
Everyone is looking for who or what to follow. Children try to follow after their parents.
teenagers follow or imitate friends and celebrities. Adults also engage in followership of role models, especially in politics and social life. How then can we as Christians decide whom to follow?
According to Arthur W. Pink, The Christian Iife is a life that consists of following Jesus” God perceived our need for instruction and example of way of life expected of us, then He sent us Jesus Christ, our perfect role model (Hebrews 4:15). Following someone other than Jesus is catastrophic.
People have ruined their lives here on earth and in eternity because they imitated worldly and ungodly models. That is way Richard of Chichester
prayed, Day by day, dear Lord of Thee three things I pray. To see Thee more clearly, to love Thee more dearly., to follow Thce more nearly. Following Jesus entails living and loving like Him whilst letting go of things and practices that may destroy you in the end. The decision to
follow Him could bring pain denial, ridicule and humilation like Jesus encountered. However, it will worth it at last.
Qoute: Jesus Christ our perfect role model
Challenge: Live as God’s renewed image bearer in
the world.
Prayer: Help me Lord to follow Thee more nearly.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
