DCLM HIGHER EVERYDAY 12 January 2022 — A good name

DCLM Higher Everyday 12 January 2022 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — A good name

TOPIC: A GOOD NAME

TEXT: PROVERBS 22:1-7

1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.

3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

4 By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.

5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.

6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

MEMORY VERSE: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold” (PROVERBS 22:1).

MESSAGE

Today’s study is about good will, credit and reputation. King Solomon opined that godly values are better than riches and encouraged everyone to love virtue and flee folly. Words of men with good character will go farther than silver and gold (riches), but riches gotten through ungodly means has no eternal value and reward.

From Matthew 19:16-22, we could observe that the rich young ruler wanted eternal life but failed to align with Christ’s eternal plan for his salvation. The poor in the Spirit are those who recognise that they cannot pay for their salvation and plead for God’s mercy to be saved. However, those who are rich physically but fail to realise that they are poor spiritually will miss heaven.

The foundation of good riches is anchored on repentance from sin and faith in the atoning blood of Jesus and holiness. However, believers are also meant to be the head and not the tail. Hence, they need to be prudent and hardworking to put an end to the reign of poverty in their lives.

QUOTE: Godly values are better than riches.

CHALLENGE: Seek God’s Kingdom first.

PRAYER: Oh God, help me to possess heavenly riches.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
