Topic: Learn From Godly Sufferers.

Bible Reading: Luke 16:19-25 (KJV)

19There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

MEMORY VERSE: “And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom” (Luke 16:22a).

Message

Job and Lazarus are two biblical figures that make one tremble when one thinks of Christian suffering. We might say that Job suffered more because apart from his bodily afflictions, he also lost his business, children and servants. But the question is, did Lazarus have a caring family, friends and thriving business? No! Till his transition to eternity, he had no good thing to boast of but what qualified him to be “carried by angels to Abraham’s bosom” – his spiritual life. Pondering on the theme of suffering, C. S. Lewis wrote, “The real problem is not why some pious, humble, believing people suffer, but why some do not.” The sufferings of the two personalities remind us of Jesus’ declaration that, “… a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15). In the midst of their pains, loneliness and deprivation, God was with them. Lazarus did not even gain his portion on earth but in eternity.

Beloved, do not allow life’s challenges, such as poverty, sickness, and failure, to deprive you of eternal bliss.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
